Junior Wildlife Club learn about the endangered Seychelles Sheath Tailed Bat

Written by admin. Posted in FrontpageNews

Junior wildlife club enjoyed learning about the Seychelles Sheath-tailed Bat.  Gen Berry from ICS came to talk to us about Sousouri Bannann and how it is so endangered there are less than 100 left in the world, all in Seychelles.  The children were horrified to hear this and wanted to know how they could help.  Gen explained how the bats feed, roost and fly, where they live and how they use echolocation to “see” and find food in the dark. The children understood how special bats are, and what a great service they provide by eating lots of insects like mosquitoes, sandflies, beetles and moths.  Everyone enjoyed dancing to the echolocation song, and making their own finger puppet bats to take home.

International Duke of Edinburgh Award

Written by admin. Posted in FrontpageNews

Last week some of our year 12 students were practising their camp craft skills in preparation for the expedition aspect of the International Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award. This included ‘fire safety awareness & building and cooking on a camp fire’ skills delivered by the Victoria Fire Service.

The two day over-night camp also included educating the students on pitching their tents, planning a journey and how to efficiently pack everything you need for your expedition.

Everyone is looking forward to the ‘real thing’ which is planned for September.

National Schools Athletics Championships 2015 – A National Champion!

Written by admin. Posted in FrontpageNews

ISS is very proud of our athletes that competed in the National Schools Athletics Championships 2015 and our pride is even greater that we have a national champion in not 1 but 2 events!

Gaelle Dubignon was a phenomenal 1st in both the 100 meter and 200 meter girls U18 finals! Congratulations to Gaelle and the Indian Ocean Games (IOG) at Reunion island now beckons in August for her.

Zoe Barois was a superb 4th in the 1,500 meter girls U18 final. After coming from behind to pick off runners one by one and only a single place off a bronze medal. Well done!!

Rodney Rose was 3rd in the 100 meter and 4th in the 200 meter boys U18 finals. A fantastic achievement considering he has only just begun sprinting (he’s a Footballer!) and he was incredibly close in both events.

Many thanks to Mr Armitt and the parents, students and other teachers for all their hard work throughout the Athletics season of inter-house, inter-school heats and national finals!

We look forward to even more success and champions next year.
